Mission

As members of the Order of Preachers, they are called to follow in Dominic’s footsteps, imitating his mercy and preaching the Gospel of Jesus Christ in and out of season. Their life in common, along with their time in study and at prayer, allows them to share the fruits of their contemplation and proclaim the good news to every land and nation. The Western Province is at forefront of teaching and preaching for the salvation of souls. They serve in parishes and campus ministries, international missions, special ministries for evangelization, prayer, education, and service to the poor and sick; as well as at the Dominican School of Philosophy and Theology, which trains the future leaders of our Church and world.

Qualifications

Clerical candidates are required to have a bachelor’s degree from a four year college or university prior to entering the Order. Cooperator brother candidates are required to be 22 years old, with a high school diploma. All candidates are expected to possess good physical health, psychological and emotional maturity, and the willingness to live with others. New converts to the Catholic faith are normally eligible to apply upon their third anniversary of entering the Church.

Formation

Both clerical and cooperator brother candidates learn the Dominican way of life through the first six years of initial formation, including a Novitiate of one year. After five years of simple vows, brothers are eligible to make solemn profession. The initial formation of clerical brothers extends another two years, during which the brother is ordained as a transitional deacon, and then as a priest. In addition to the Novitiate and a pastoral year, Dominican priests receive at least six years of graduate education: two years of philosophical studies and four years of theological studies.
