Mission

The Community of Franciscan Sisters of the Renewal is a contemplative/active order established in1988 as a parallel community to the Franciscan Friars of the Renewal.

In imitation of St. Francis of Assisi, the Sisters seek to follow in the footsteps of Jesus, as a prophetic witness that life is a pilgrimage to the Father, of faith, hope, and love of God and neighbor, made possible by the Holy Spirit. The Sisters participate in Christ's renewal of all things through their prayer, fraternal life, service to the poor, and evangelization.

The Sisters strive to live the Gospel in joyful simplicity according to the ideals of St. Francis, as handed on by the Capuchin tradition. The values uniting the sisters include a strong Eucharistic and Marian prayer life, an emphasis on common life imbued with a warm family spirit, joyful imitation of St. Francis and St. Clare, faithfulness to the Magisterium of the Church, and loyalty to the Holy Father. The Sisters' two-fold apostolic mission is hands on work with the poor and evangelization. The ministry is accomplished through a variety of apostolates including a soup kitchen, drop-in centers, food pantries, clothing pantries, home-visits, pro-life witness, retreat work, and youth ministry. The CFR Sisters currently have two convents in New York City, where they were founded, and mission convents in Leeds, England, in Drogheda, Ireland, and in Atlantic City, New Jersey.
