Mission
Called by Christ to live the Gospel in community, the Benedictine monks of St. Procopius Abbey seek God by a life of prayer, obedience, and personal conversion, according to the Rule of St. Benedict and the direction of the Abbot. By persevering in the monastery until death, they witness to the primacy of God in a community of mutual love that in all things God may be glorified. Prayer and conversion are at the heart of their life. They also serve the outside community in different ways, such as by offering hospitality to guests and visitors, administering the sacraments, and giving talks.
Qualifications
To become a monk at St. Procopius Abbey, a man must be an unmarried practicing Catholic, 21 to 45 years old.
Formation
Before entering the monastery, candidates are asked to visit multiple times and to go through a process designed to prepare them for entry. When they enter, there is a 6 month postulancy and then a year-long novitiate. After this, temporary vows are professed for at least 3 years. Finally, the monk takes final or solemn vows which commit the monk to the monastery for life.
International
Benedictine Abbeys are autonomous though the Benedictine Confederation has its headquarters at Sant'Anselmo in Rome.
